I am not smiling with Sarah.

I am out of my element, so posting has been hard for me. I traveled over the holiday weekend, and, as I expected, the experience was quite pleasant. The TSA folks couldn't have been nicer.

Anyway, I haven't been watching too much news, but it looks like this Korean conflict is heating up. Still, as this crisis continues to escalate, I am sure that many of you are thankful that Sarah Palin is not next in line to hold the most powerful position in the world. I hate to beat a dead...OK, that's a lie, I actually enjoy beating up on Sarah, but can you imagine her calling Kim Jong il and telling him not to worry because A-merry-ca has his back? Don't laugh. I really believe that she does think he is a friend. But that's what I believe. Even if you agree with Mitchell Bard who wrote a great article for the Huffington Post, (excerpt below) you have to acknowledge how dangerous Sarah Palin truly is.

I know that folks on the right and all of her fans are going to call it a simple slip of the tongue, but this latest verbal faux pas goes to much deeper issues with Sarah.

"The real story, though, isn't that Palin said "North" instead of "South." Let's be honest: Vice President Joe Biden could have just as easily blown a line like that.

No, the real story is that Palin was discussing a complex, precarious, highly dangerous issue as if she were an expert, even though she clearly isn't.

Does anyone outside of Palin's relatively small group of smitten followers honestly believe that she is competent to act as an expert on Korean policy? That she knows the intricacies and risks of engaging with the North Koreans? That she understands the possible leadership struggle going on there? Do you think she has the first clue about the history of Korea over the last century? Do you think she's ever heard of Syngman Rhee, the Bodo League massacre, the Battle of Inchon, or National Security Council Report 68, or that she knows about the decades of Japanese rule in Korea? Do you think she's ever read about the role the propaganda efforts of the post-Stalin Soviet government played in the eventual armistice that ended the fighting?"
[Article]

Of course we don't, and there in lies the problem: She is a intellectual lightweight who has been elevated to a status by her followers that she cannot live up to. And,of course, she knows this, she has to be aware of her limitations. But it's too late for her to come clean now. She is like a grifter who is too deep into the con to reveal her true self.

Let' s hope that the con doesn't last until November, 2012.

Field, I am tired of you beating up on my girl, Sarah. She is just trying like every American is doing--trying to get a job.

Why are you sooo scared what she might do to North Korea if she were President? Hell, it's 'North Korea' who oughta be scared.

My guess is that after a few words with North Korea she would probably nuke their asses.

Field, a black liberal progressive dem brotha said he would shoot the President if he had a chance. You folks on the liberal side are crazy. No one on the black conservative side would EVER say anything of the sort. They are much too civil for that.

Hell, Rush or Beck would NEVER say something like that.

Why don't you start it? A crude fellow like me needs a model to follow. From your comment, you obviously know what it takes to start an elegant dialogue. I have never known such elegance. :D

Well that could be said for all bloggers in general and most of us who routinely discuss stuff that we don't fully understand! Everyone has opinions and blogs certainly are an example of bias confirmation in the works. However the point is somewhat well taken that if Ms. Palin would like to have political power in the USA, then she ought to be well informed enough to talk like she knows...even if all her statements are canned. That's what all the other politicians do!
She needs to educate herself more, which has always been my chief criticism about her...some people have balls and others have brains, but world leaders ought to have both! I think she has a lot of guts, but her knowledge of world affairs seems to be sorely lacking.

For Anon who posted

Really - that's your reasoning? Bush didn't know much either and he did just fine. Wow. I really don't know what to say to that. You sir are an idiot.

I, however, agree that the point that was missed by most bloggers which you pointed out wonderfully in this post - was that Sarah Palin needs to convince me that she is more than just talking points. I for one do not believe that she knows any more about North and South Korea than what she just stated. For all I know, she could just be reading something that someone wrote for her. The problem is - I just don't think she cares enough to educate herself. As long as she has her adoring fans clinging to her every word as the gospel truth - why should she care?
Great post and until I read it - couldn't really understand what the fuss was all about.

I read one blogger, an American, who lives in South Korea and is well versed on North Korea. There are a lot of experts who blog and there are also who blog who think it is necessary to do research before they put fingers to keyboard.

I wouldn't compare Sarah Palin to bloggers in general, I would compare her more to Snooki.

If Ms. Palin valued learning and being knowledgeable, even without a degree, there would be some basic things she would know. Just listening to her parents as a child, should have given her some perspective on Korea and the Soviets.

----------------------------------
Knowing the difference between North Korea and South Korea should be something that every American much less someone who was a VP candidate should know.
My take is that Sarah was so anxious to make the news cycle that she got South Korea and North Korea mixed up but that happens when someone wants to be more of a media darling than someone who is actually interested in substance.

However the point is somewhat well taken that if Ms. Palin would like to have political power in the USA, then she ought to be well informed enough to talk like she knows...even if all her statements are canned. That's what all the other politicians do!

---------------------------------My you have a short memory. Let’s see Bush didn’t need any of that fancy book learning because he went with his guts and see where that got us----in two wars we can’t win but won’t admit we can’t ‘win’ them whatever that means. Having real guts is doing the right thing ( not going to war) although it may be popular.
Considering the issues that we are having domestically America doesn’t have the luxury of being the world police any more because the American public just empowered the GOP to oppose everything Obama does for the sole purpose of defeating him in 2012 not doing what’s best for the country. Now we’re going to be stuck with a federal government that is going to be in turmoil for at least the next two years while the rest of the world moves forward.

As for Sarah educating herself, she has realized that that isn’t necessary for her to get what she wants—cold hard cash and her face all over the media. Unfortunately like the Field stated Sarah is in too deep with her hustle to back out now and unfortunately people like you actually believe she any qualities of being a leader. All Sarah is a glorified cheerleader looking for an audience.

Field come on man, the ruling class will use an absolute imbecile if it fits their purposes.

They have done it before-- look at the last Bush. All you need is a willingness to stick it to average every day human beings--while convincing the horribly misinformed US working class that you are on their side-- without remorse.

And it helps to have the ability to somehow justify the heinous goings on, (assasinating opponents, bombing folks, allowing your multinational to rape the 3rd World and on and on) that you will be party to as president of the most economically unequal, unfair, socially unequal, predatory, parasitical, violent and powerful ruling classes the world has ever known

Palin has shown that she can handle the job requirements quite well. Look at her record as governor. She silenced her critics by any means necessary, pushed deregulation and gave a nod to anything that supports rich folks interest, gave a nod to encroaching on the environment and wildlife.

And as a candidate she used her run for office to line her pockets. She has been a shameless self promoter. Taken credit for what she didn't do (write a book. Had a book written that create her own kind of Camelot. She has made up words. Shown a willingness to be demagogic without considering the consequences. She has shown that she is quite willing to knock off the enemies of US imperialism.

I disagree with the naysayers she could be just the ticket for the ruling class. There is no doubt that she can handle the job.

And the folks talking about how important it is for Palin to be versed on foreign policy and the North Korea situation are just buying into ruling class hype.

What North Korea does is North Korea's business and if they threaten South Korea its between those two. The US is only interested out of their own self interest. The ruling class could care less about the welfare of the North or South Koreans, which is why they let thousands of North Koreans starve not that long ago.

In fact, the US ironically is never in favor of the most peaceful solution to the Korean's tension, --which by the way both countries populations were clearly in favor of --and that is reunification.

Hathor said...

Melleanous,

I think you should talk to ordinary Koreans about.

If it is not your concern, I do think that other Americans might think so. I actually would trust Iran before North Korea with nuclear weapons. North Korea doesn't have the capability to strike Hawaii or the mainline, but I do think Kim Jong Il wouldn't blink an eye selling to a terrorist group.

Even if the North Koreans would only use Nuclear weapons on the South. The fallout could still effect us here in the US. When the Chinese did above ground testing, the Strontium 90 radiation went up in milk in the US.

Sarah Palin does not have the knowledge of world affairs to come off like a savvy politician. IT isn't plainer than that.

And as to Hathor, it doesn't matter how much 'research' bloggers tend to do to justify their biases, blogs are an example of how bias confirmation has become mistaken for facts...like FOX news. You don't know how many sites I go to that tout the Drudge Report and Rush as being the bastions of pure 'facts' and these people read lots of books written by folks that corroborate their point of view.

Bloggers are no different, except scientific bloggers who blog about experimental results and theories in journals. And even then depending on the topic, wild conjectures are often made without proof or research on those points.

Hathor its nice that some bloggers do research before they post but this research generally isn't objective in the first place!

Who said this woman was gonna be the front-runner for the presidential nomination? I bet you dollars to donuts the GOP will field someone the likes of Mitt Romney, not someone who was recruited at the last minute as a female foil against an African-American presidential candidate.

Speaking of Palin, the woman is merely a distraction from other, more important topics. Making a gaffe on a subject that she doesn't have much understanding on isn't news.

"In fact, the US ironically is never in favor of the most peaceful solution to the Korean's tension, --which by the way both countries populations were clearly in favor of --and that is reunification."

The process of reunification -- if it happens -- will be far more intensive than the process East and West Germany undertook. Combining a modern population and First World society with a population that's undergone serious brainwashing and deprivation for the past 60 years isn't something that should be taken lightly. The South Korean government isn't exactly looking forward to the logistics nightmare this reunification process represents.

And it won't be done with Kim Jung Il alive. The next leader might be more amenable to such a prospect. Maybe.

I noticed your description of Bowden and the picture HuffPost featured in the article. So instead of the "black liberal progressive dem brotha", I'm looking at a old White war vet who's probably suffering some sort of mental illness. Apparently he was feeling so down he wanted to commit "suicide by Secret Service agent".

Of course Rushbo and Glenn wouldn't say such things. They merely suggest to their listeners that the president is worth shooting and let the listeners themselves make the leap from thinking about shooting him to actually putting the plan in motion.

Mack you did get my point and that is, reunification was indeed being considered by the Korea's. And how did they get divided in the first place? Hmmmm

Hathor - the most dangerous nation with nuclear weapons is not North KOrea. Thats your propagandized North American mind talking.

The most dangerous nation that posseses nuclear arms is the good ole US of A. Remember the first and only country to nuke a country was the US and they did it to Japan twice. They were considering it a third time during the so-called Cuban missle crisis.

And these crazy people running this country actually talk about winning a nuclear war.

And don't be naive US multinational arms countries sell weapons to despots all the time. And the US government has sold and given away lots of arms to lots of dictators and despots over the years. The US government not North Korea has invaded two countries over the last ten years and is presently dropping bombs on another (Pakistan).

Perspective is indeed needed here.

Purple Cow- I agree that statement about being an American is all you need to know to get by in the world is an asinine and arrogant as well wrong headed statement.

BTW, I see many a conservative using the words "liberal" and "progressive" as four-letter words in regards to politics. It's interesting to see the liberal ideology and the progressive political movement being demonized in the same manner socialism was when it was hitched up to the Marxist and Nazism wagons. Conservatives have done such a thorough job making those words "dirty" that most people are scared to mention that they are "liberal" or "progressive" in polite company, lest they be accused of being a "commie" or a "Marxist" or something of that nature.

The whole point of the conservative ideology is to "conserve" -- to retain the status quo, to move the country at a much slower pace and for the most part keeping things the way they are, even if doing so ultimately hurts the country socioeconomically. Being "Progressive" suggests moving the country forward with new ideas, in a neverending quest to improve and elevate the nation at large. Being "liberal" suggests being open to new ideas and concepts and being tolerant of other viewpoints. So it's interesting to see the words "progressive" and "liberal" being treated the way they are in the media and in most areas of public discourse.

Conservative = good
progressive/liberal = bad
socialist = Marxist/Communist/Nazi (even though Nazism was more right-wing than people gave it credit for)

Between FDR and the end of Reagan's term, these words were turned on their head and rearranged to have different meanings. I'd like to know the process of tossing this word salad for political gain, as it may hold the key to changing people's perceptions for the better.

Don't believe everything you read. That's the trouble with you liberal filthy dogs. You lack discernment in what you read, and you select only that that suits you. When you take one side of an argument, you are biased. The difference in bloggers is that some will look for varied sources to support their thesis, rather than using another blog. I have found some bloggers that may not be expert in a field, but do know of some expert that is knowledgeable. Their premise may not be with what I agree, but their argument is very plausible. I also take into account their experience, if they seem to be well read or discussions in their expertise is rational.
For example, there is one blogger I read, that I know is on the conservative side, but since he lives in South Korea, I don't discount his observations on the relationship between North and South Korea or his analysis of North Korea's modus operandi, because of the historians, journalist and academics he cites. I don't automatically think that the analysis is wrong, but that it is a way of looking at a situation that is worth thinking about.

Actually that's more of a compliment than you meant. Having a kaleidoscopic view means that I see things from different points of view and other's points of view.

Unlike most others who continue to buy the hype and want to pretend that the folks in power actually care about us and that their lackeys are really going to represent us in their places of power, I see things as they really are.

You may actually be guilty of seeing things through rose colored glasses if you believe that your interests and the interests of folks who run society strictly for profit and power are one and the same.

Unlike you, I don't pretend to be a power broker or anything other than what I am in the big scheme of things and that is just another worker, who is also a journalist, a minister and an activist.

Anon- If you read what I write you would know that I think outside the box probably more than most folks on respond to Fields blog.

But I am one dimensional about wanting justice and equality for all as well as wanting everyone to be able to have the ability to feed one's family and have shelter and clean water and health care.

Yes I see what isn't and ask why can't human beings be more fully human.

If that makes me one dimensional then I am proud to be so.

History is on my side. Just because you think that societies can't produce a more equal distribution of wealth doesn't mean that its not possible.

Actually contrary to the shots folks have tried to take at me on this thread I and others like me are the forward thinking and the creative thinkers, because we dream of a world in which human beings can have life's basic necessities and have a semblance of liberty and be able to pursue happiness.

Mellaneous, "Yes I see what isn't and ask why can't human beings be more fully human."

You want to explain that bit about being more 'fully' human? From where I am standing that's the problem already. People act like people have always done. They are self-centered, selfish, greedy, angry and deluded. That's what it means to be human.

If you want humans to be more generous, loving, caring, and wise, then they will have to become more God-conscious...more God-centered...more connected to the 'whole'. I am surprised that a minister like you does not speak about God.

Albert Einstein once said, "A human being is a part of a whole, called by us the universe, a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings as something separated from the rest... a kind of 'optical delusion' of his consciousness. This 'delusion' is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest to us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty."

He also said, "two things are infinite...the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the Universe."

Do you not agree?

I actually read the first dozen comments you received and they are pretty darn fascinating. Love the Anonymous quotes, some of which are actually thoughtful.

Anyway, after watching the DWTS debacle where Palin's daughter made it to the Finals w/o justification or ability, I truly believe the Palin juggernaut and Tea Party enthusiasts are to be reckoned with and not overlooked, dismissed or considered unimportant. Collectively, they have clout. And boy is that scary.

You are right but I am afraid those progressive liberal black dems have already dismissed her as irrelevant--despite the clout she has shown. This is how the Democrats continues to shoot themselves in the foot decade after decade. They don't know how to discern or how to pay attention to WHAT IS. They would rather pay attention to what's in their political imaginations. The wingnuts know this 'fact' about them. That's why they come out with 'reality' of what they are doing. They know the dems will overlook it and imagine something else. LOL Just read some of the comments and how they talk themselves out of what is actually happening.

They actually think that Sarah does not have a shot at the Presidency because they think she is stupid. IMO, that is stupid thinking, considering she is gaining more and more momentum and clout.

Can Palin see Korea from her house?

I doubt she knows about the history of the two Koreas, because she doesn't read.

So what? How necessary is it for her to know? she can still be President and have advisors who specialize in those sort of things. Get a grip.

"Why didn't you mention the insulting remark PC made to America? Are you so much of a Marxist and a hater of your own country that you praise people outside of your country who demean it?"

And there we go.

Please explain why you consider mellaneous a "Marxist" because he/she has a viewpoint that differs from yours, as well as why you wince at any kind of criticism leveled at the U.S.? I'd like to know.

MackLying, "Please explain why you consider mellaneous a "Marxist" because he/she has a viewpoint that differs from yours, as well as why you wince at any kind of criticism leveled at the U.S.? I'd like to know."

And here we go again. You obviously don't know the difference between and insult and a criticism. Maybe you ought to read PC's comment on Thanksgiving Day, you ungrateful jackass.

Yes, G.W. Bush was a brain-damaged (alcohol and other drug use) tool, but he did just fine indeed for his base (global petrochemical companies), as would Sarah Palin, community college serial dropout.

Some historical tidbits of interest from the past Korean conflict:

Syngman Rhee was the unpopular leader of South Korea who goaded the North to attack in order to build political capital.

General MacArthur was a nutcase who wanted to nuke China as part of a ulta right-wing religious crusade against communism. His ideological adherents include none other than the Rev. Sun Myung Moon.

MacArthur's strategy of advancing to the Chinese border prompted China to invade the North, prolonging the war and increasing the casualty count by many hundreds of thousands. He had been warned well in advance of this happening, since the Korean peninsula had been the historic route that Japan's armies had used to invade China.

It would probably not be a good idea to antagonize China these days since they pretty much own our economy, and seemingly make 99.9 percent of our consumer goods.

PC deliberately spoke disparing of America on Thanksgiving Day on an American blog, you ignoramus. That wasn't a criticism, it was a blatant insult. Of course, a Commie like you appreciates it. Maybe you should move to wherever the hell PC lives and you both can throw spitballs at America, you unpatriotic ungrateful fool.

Mahndisa S. Rigmaiden said...

Hathor we spoke past each other lol! Even the Korean blogger you cite is biased due to his life experience. Pardon my cynicism but bias is ubiquitous. The only things that aren't biased are true factual accounts like video tapings of events and even then the recordings have to be put into context!

”Pray tell, PC...what is wrong with my statement, when there is plenty of proof that is the case?”

What is wrong with your sentence is that it fails to deal with reality. The truth is, that American empire is dying, it is in terminal decline. The future belongs to India or China (if I had to guess I would say India, but it’s too soon to tell.) The twentieth century was your century, but it’s over now, and now you should be going through the same process that we went through ninety years ago. It’s a tough pill to swallow, but some politician somewhere in America is going to have to face that reality and convince the American people of it.

The difference between accepting this new reality and ignoring it, is the difference between the best-case scenario (a semi-prosperous market for Indian and Chinese goods) and the worst-case (total collapse).

America’s failure to bring in a sensible socialized medicine system means that your already failing manufacturing sector will become increasingly uncompetitive, (health care costs add $1250 to the cost of every car made in America). And will make your society even less able to handle the demographic and epidemiological time-bombs that await you. Meanwhile the source of your current world standing (your military-industrial complex) will become fiscally unsupportable. This though will no doubt come as some relief to the 70 nations that the USA invaded in the 20th century.

Then if we factor in central and southern America’s turn towards democratic Socialism, leaving you without local allies. Tied in with the right-wing’s veneration and adoration of stupidity and willful ignorance, that leads to the likes of Sarah Palin being offered as a serious candidate to run the country – and you have an almost perfect storm.

Call me old-fashioned, but I draw comfort from the fact that the current American President is more intelligent than me.

**
”Your trouble is that you can't ACCEPT it and that colors how you see things...PERVERTED.”

I think it’s you that needs a reality check. You and your buddies on America’s far-right are guilty of cognitive disodance on a societal rather than an individual scale. Something we haven’t witnessed since Munich in 1933.

**
”So what the hell do you know?”

More than you, clearly.

”
Of course, you don't live in the USA, which you claim to be 'thankful' for on OUR THANKSGIVING DAY. To make such an insulting statement on an 'American' blog TO AMERICANS is about as wrong as you can get.”

Firstly, there’s no such thing as an ‘American blog’. The internet does not know national borders. Secondly, there is nothing insulting to Americans about what I wrote. I happen to have a lot of time for Americans, I’m married to one for Christ’s sake, and my own two sons are American citizens. I just don’t happen to like the direction American society is heading in.

America will never again be a great nation, but it has the capacity to be a valued and valuable member of the global community. It’s just choosing not to be, and that’s a great shame.

”Do you know the potential consequences of a statement like that?”

Ahhhh America’s democracy and freedom of speech. Don’cha just love it?

”
I am looking forward to Palin's reign as President. I intend to give her your name.”

“Mrs President, Mrs. President, there’s this guy in Europe who doesn’t agree with you!”

I am not going "get a grip."

We've been down this road before-- an ignorant and clueless president leading the country.

Thank you Anon (9:51pm 11/27). You put it very well indeed. I have been dismissive of her in the past but no more. The DNP and Pres Obama and the rest really never put anything of substance together for the MidTerms and we lost as was pre-dicted. The Tea Partiers gained strength, momentum and made their point(s) very well, i.e. they won more than they lost. We are up against it, she's in the race, hell, Trump is in the race! We have to take her seriously.

Sarah is a bully who makes money trashing the Obamas because to her supporters they represent black elite---college educated and a step above non-college-educated whites.Roderick

Oh Roderick I didn't say she had balls for attacking the President. Actually the only things I read about the woman are here because honestly, I could really care less. But don't get it twisted she is clearly uneducated in issues that matter and yet makes public appearances talking about these very issues. That takes balls. As to other stuff I don't know. I am not a follower or a fan of hers.

I don't like it when people trash her family or other policiticans families though. They need to leave the kids out of it!

Now I can say that I watch the video Luthor posted, and have some questions. Were the people who were interviewed from different parts of the country or in the same town? this goes to show you that people do not watch the news. For example, if the people lived in Montana, then they may not who other Congress people for other parts of the country as there are about 435 member of Congress, and someone can correct me if that number is wrong. There is no question that the American people are misinformed and think it's a combination of the media and the people themselves. I do recall that people believe that Obama was not a citizen of this country, and a Muslim. I remember that poor woman at the McCain rally who believe that Obama was a terrorist. There are misinformed folks everywhere, for example, the Healthcare reform bill that the Republicans want to appeal is similar bill that Senator Dole had in 1993 or 1994. The Obama Administration doesn't good job in promoting their successes. One thing Bush did he had the same message to the point that he was sick of saying it, but it was effective because it was a simple message that people understood. One thing that no one really notice that when Obama finally signed the healthcare reform bill, he was holding back his tears perhaps it may have been a good thing because would have remember how he talked about his mother who suffered from cancer spent her last days fighting with the insurance company to provide coverage for her medical costs. That bill was personal for him, and for me as well who had a mother with cancer and she dealing with insurance companies to pay for cancer drug treatments. For some reason why don't like it very much who can show restraint over their emotions, but then we don't like crybabies either.
